If there’s one thing Ravenna Chastain knows, it’s when to break up. And after nearly becoming the victim of a cult that mistakes her for a witch, it’s easy to step out of a dead-end career and be ready for a fresh start. But where can you find a job that uses your highly specialized skills? The answer is quite clear: she becomes a matchmaker.
But even a successful matchmaker sometime can’t find someone for everyone, and Ravenna really considers Ethan Sweetwater her first professional failure. After nine failed dates, Ravenna knows it’s time to let Ethan go.
But Ethan refuses to be fired as a client: he needs a last date for a business event. Since Ravenna needs a date for a family celebration, they make a deal: she will be his (business) date if he will be her (fake) date for her grandparents’ anniversary party.
What Ethan doesn’t mention is that attending the fair is a cover for an industrial espionage he’s doing as a favor to the new head of the Illusion Town Guild. Ravenna is happy to help, but their relationship gets even more complicated when things heat up: the chemistry between them is explosive, as explosive as the danger that awaits Ravenna. Luckily for them, Ethan is not only an engineer, but also a Sweetwater, and the Sweetwaters are known for hunting monsters…

The story begins with Ravenna Chastain being held in a cage in an underworld cave awaiting execution for being a witch. She was supposed to be undercover for the FBPI, but her support seems to have been delayed. It looks like Ravenna and her new friend Harriet the Dust Bunny will have to save themselves. Using his psychic ability to create psychic fire, he manages to capture the main villain just before the FBPI finally arrives.
Ravenna decides to change careers after her ordeal. After all, criminal profiling and matchmaking are not that different. But Ravenna has a new problem with a customer like no other. Ethan Sweetwater has had nine failed dates, and although Ravenna wants out of his contract, he’s demanding one last date: with her.
Luckily, Ethan is a phlegmatic engineer with a hidden talent for hunting, because when he picks her up on her date, he discovers that she was attacked by the last person who was right for her. He walked by, pulled out a gun and said she had to die so he could save his business. Ethan rises to the occasion and also takes care of the things.
However, that’s just the first mishap the couple experiences. A series of hit-and-run attacks gives the pair plenty of opportunities for “bonding experiences.” Through each of them, the couple grows closer, although Ravenna is convinced but not thrilled that they are just fake dates.
This was really another great episode in the Harmony universe. Harriet the pen-collecting Dust Bunny is a great addition to the roster of Dust Bunnys who have joined the main characters of this series. I really like the dialogue in this series and this one had particularly sharp dialogue. I liked the way Ravenna and Ethan started to trust and accept each other’s weaknesses.
This author is one of the authors that got me into the urban fantasy genre and I’m so glad to be back in this series. After so many books, this author has not lost her touch. This was full of laughter, action, romance and two encounters that I was definitely expecting. Raveena and Ethan are a great couple and I loved seeing them together.
I can’t forget to mention Dust Bunny Harriet. The Dust Bunnies almost made the books themselves. Such a fun addition to any Ghost Hunter book. If you want to read a light, well-written paranormal romance with some mystery in it, by all means give it a try. This series is very funny. Highly recommended.
