(Although reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to structure my opinions using a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: — The plot is captivating from start to finish. It has many unique elements, no big holes, and a sense of focus. Major plot points are dropped or not resolved (cliffhanger). The scenario is clear and believable. The schedule can be a bit difficult to follow. One unique element here is that we basically have 2 simultaneous timelines. Not only are Matthew and Diana learning more about themselves and each other, there are aggravating factors and dangerous situations in both the 16th and 21st centuries.

The main focus is on the past, but isolated scenes from the present remind us that time passes there too. There are so many different elements in the game, but surprisingly everything holds up well. The timeline is harder to follow here than it was in Volume 1, mainly because it’s spread out over a longer period of time. There is at least one place where things just don’t seem to add up, but the milestones of various festivals and celebrations help keep things organized.

Characters: — Related, realistic, interesting and dynamic characters. Even the secondary characters have depth, as do the relationships between the characters. While all the characters from the first book continue with their own stories, we only get a glimpse of the “present” and are introduced to a whole new cast of characters in the past.

Aside from Matthew and Diana, there’s really no overlap, and all the new characters we meet are at least as vibrant and intriguing as the ones we’ve met before. Depictions of real historical figures have that interesting additional element of fiction that represents at least some historical truth. Some very strong (and complicated!) family relationships, especially when Diana and Matthew get involved with Philippe, Stephen, Jack and Annie.

Mechanics and Writing: – Few, if any, typos, punctuation problems, or misspellings. (<3/100pgs) Clever use of POV. Skillful writing that adds to the story. Errors include: minor punctuation or formatting issues, some minor inconsistencies. POV is mostly Diana in the first person, with some scenes (all or most if Diana isn’t around to narrate) in a kind of universal third-person narration that gets into the minds of those needed to tell the important details.

Redemptive Value: — Partially focused uplifting themes or lessons. Drugs, alcohol, violence, etc. they’re not glorified, though it’s definitely shaky ground. Several slightly explicit sex scenes. Implicit moral guidelines for behavior. More of the kind of vampire morality that involves bloodshed and power plays. The added element of blood rage drives a vampire further into unreasonable violence. Some scenes with characters taking a lot of opium, although this is not viewed approvingly.

Diana and Matthew are married and have sex. She describes herself in more detail than she would prefer, but the focus really is on how the sex plays out in their overall relationship each time. In other words, it’s pretty explicit, but not for nothing. Some great topics about second chances, reconciliation, forgiveness, family and love.
