I kept this book. It’s the only Angela Marsons book I haven’t read, and it was my security blanket when I desperately needed that Marsons solution. Well, I finally got to the point where I had to have it and succumbed. Let me say that it was worth the wait.

Ms. Marsons is an emerging stellar thriller writer for the world. She is one of my 2 favorite female authors of all time (either #1 or just #1, I can’t decide) and any thriller reader who hasn’t found her needs to wake up. With that in mind, I must tell you that this woman is also a noted writer of contemporary psychological novels. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, I can’t believe she doesn’t have an advanced degree in psychology/psychiatry.

Dear Mother is a compelling story about the psychological impact of a father physically abusing his three daughters. Don’t let that put you off. When the abuse is referenced, it’s not very graphic, and most of the story takes place after the daughters reach adulthood. The three women are affected in different ways; moreover, their relations with each other were also damaged. The novel is an intelligent and emotional portrait of how they achieve a degree of peace with their demons.

The characters, especially the sisters Catherine and Alex, are very well done. The counseling sessions between Catherine and her therapist are written with considerable depth and realism and are for me the highlight of the novel. The dialogue is outstanding. This lasted 2 days. This reflects how spellbound he was by the story. I developed a deep connection with these people and their problems.

As a side light, I’d like to mention that I liked how Ms. Marsons incorporates narrative from the past when it’s relevant to the story, as opposed to the more recent tendency of chapters between the present and previous years to take turns. This technique really preserves the flow of the story.

I was delighted to see that Ms. Marsons recently signed a deal with Bookouture to write 8 more novels in Kim Stone’s brilliant series (there are currently 4 episodes with #5 coming November 2016). On the other hand, that probably means we’re unlikely to get sexier psychological portraits of her, at least not anytime soon.

Although this makes me sad, at least we have this book plus The Forgotten Woman. These books were written before the Kim Stone series began and were self-published under various titles. Bookouture has just relaunched them in a brilliant move to showcase her hidden talents. If only they could figure out how to clone her now…

I recommend Dear Mother and The Forgotten Woman to anyone looking for a powerful read done right. Well done, Mrs. Marsons.

When Beth contacted her two sisters, Catherine and Alex, she wanted to inform them that her mother had passed away. However, after not speaking to each other for years, Catherine and Alex’s reaction was one of sincere relief: their bitterness at the cruelty and rancor the three sisters received as children from the mother who was meant to love them and who would never be forgotten. – or forgiven. But Beth did not remember the worst act that had happened to her, and she had stayed in the family home, taking care of her mother until her death.

The past had deeply affected the sisters, but neither of them knew it. Alex’s life was out of control; she drunk all the time, she had no way to stop the events that consumed her entire being. While Catherine was the opposite: she had achieved everything; Determined to prove her mother wrong, she was a high-flying executive with a husband and two daughters. So what could possibly go wrong with that? The events of one night shattered the world she had carefully constructed around her. And Beth lived in blissful ignorance…

Will Alex, Catherine and Beth be able to fill the void left by the horrors of their childhood? Could they have some level of peace in their lives? Whatever happens in their future, it will be a painful and harrowing journey from which they may not recover…

Angela Marsons’ The Middle Child is an emotional, traumatic and harrowing journey. Child abuse is a terrible thing; that the perpetrator is the person who gave birth to that child, without showing any love to that child, is overwhelming. I thoroughly enjoy this author’s work and The Middle Child is no exception. A brilliant read that I highly recommend.
