Simon Snow is really the worst chosen one ever chosen.
That’s what his roommate Baz says about him. And Baz may be evil, a vampire, and a complete idiot, but he’s probably right.
Half the time Simon can’t even get his wand to work, and the other half he’s lighting something up. His mentor is avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster walking around with Simon’s face. Baz would have a great day with all of this if he were here: it’s his last year at Watford School of Magicks and Simon’s annoying nemesis hasn’t even bothered to show up.
Carry On book is a ghost story, a love story, and also a mystery. There’s as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell tale, but many, many more monsters.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is a book that is meta in concept. It’s based on fan fiction, on a series of fictional novels, on another fictional novel, and can be related to the Harry Potter series through some kind of paint-by-numbers technique if you wish. It’s about the goal, to put it simply. While that means it could make an excellent argument for the legitimacy of fan fiction as a whole, that’s not my point here. No, what I want to talk about is the book itself. Honestly, Carry On is a fantastic read.
One of the main problems with the YA genre as a whole is that GLBTQI+ characters are often not seen as the main leads. Actually, fiction as a whole has a problem with diversity, but let’s focus on that for now. Simply put, this book doesn’t have that problem.
Based on the fanfiction by Cath from Fangirl, the book is primarily about the development of a romantic relationship between the characters Simon Snow, the worst chosen person in history, and Baz Grimm-Pitch, clearly a vampire. There is also, like every good magical “series”, a mystery to solve and a great evil to fight. And the twist on this big bad is so damn clever that I couldn’t stop screeching about it. Seriously, I think I upset the person I was talking to.
The characters in this novel are so memorable that it really felt like I was returning to a cast of characters that I had known for years. This was actually my first Rainbow Rowell novel and I have been assured that this is common in his books. Penelope may be one of my favorite ladies of all time and I loved that the relationship between her and Simon turned out to be crush at its finest and that there was never any talk of them meeting.
When Penelope is accused of not liking Simon’s relationship with her girlfriend Agatha, she replies with a simple “she made them both miserable”, which is true. Speaking of Agatha, she is an interesting character. Rowell managed to create a character that I hate, but at the same time I totally understand why he does the things he does and I support his choices and I just want him to be happy in life. That is a special talent.
Simon and Baz are the focus of the novel and their characters are the most mature and fun to read. I’d say it’s extra fun to read Simon’s point of view and then directly Baz’s simply because Simon gets things wrong. He may be the one, but he’s a blind idiot. Which actually makes him the kind of hero I like. I have a guy. I don’t see that as a problem.
I’d love to say more about this novel, but I feel like even the smallest detail could ruin someone else’s experience. Needless to say, I think this is something that people should take notice of. Especially if they ever really liked the Harry Potter series. Rowell places us in a completely created world, but we never feel lost or lacking in information. We run alongside the characters as their problems escalate at breakneck speed and we never feel the pace falter. It’s a slow build leading to an explosive ending and I’m glad I read it.
…I’d really like to read some of Simon Snow’s other adventures as well.
