THE STORY: Wyatt Fontenot regrets his decision to become a GhostWalker like his brother. He left home a healer and returned a murderer. Enhanced as the super soldier, Wyatt has the reflexes and also instincts of a cat. Returning home, he meets Pepper, a sexy, deadly trained assassin who can charm and kill her prey like a snake. Pepper tries to protect three little girls who are also gifted with deadly viper talents. Wyatt and Pepper must figure out if they can trust each other and accept the talents they’ve been given, all the while trying to save the girls from the man who is out to destroy them.
OPINION: I ended up liking this book because I really liked the Wyatt and Pepper characters. They are both quite confused with their upgrades and both need to learn to accept each other. The GhostWalkers series has gotten weirder as the books have gone on. At first, the characters were enhanced with strength and psychic talents. Now we have crossed humans with cats, snakes and spiders. I don’t mind the suspension of disbelief, but there is no doubt that this series has changed from what it was when it started.
My other minor complaint is that the timeline of this book doesn’t match up with the others in the series. Too much happened to Wyatt in the period from NIGHT GAME to VIPER GAME to be explained in the few years between the two books in the timeline.
This book has dark undertones as Pepper and Wyatt’s relationship is obsessive and possessive due to their characteristics. At the same time, Feehan lightened the mood by giving us another look at Fontenot’s grandmother, Nonny, who is adorable and does all the books she appears in. The way she treats Wyatt and his team just makes the reader smile. The book needs a smile because sometimes it seems impossible that there could be a happy ending to Wyatt and Pepper’s relationship because they both have to overcome extreme hardships because she was created to need sex to control them.
I also really appreciate that the overall story seems to be in firm control again. For several books, the story became so unfocused and confusing that the future of the entire series seemed to be in doubt. Now the story has refocused on Whitney and most of the superfluous plotlines have been removed, making the series stronger. I hope that Feehan makes good on the promises of several couples that she has hinted at by including an interesting couple in this book.
WORTH MENTIONING: She was really hoping to see Gator and Flame from NIGHT GAME since this book is about Gator’s brother. Unfortunately, there wasn’t even a cameo.
FINAL DECISION: I really enjoyed this book, although I felt that the overall nature of the GhostWalkers series turned out to be more fantastical than scientific. Pepper is a deeply damaged hero and I love her. I also felt like the series progressed after a couple of books that got too complicated and unfocused.
RELATED BOOKS: VIPER GAME is the 11 book in the GhostWalkers series. This one can be read separately from all the others, as there is enough information here to understand what is happening in the overall story.
