Corporate attorney Ava Burch is fed up with the big city and everyday life. Raised in rural Texas by her father, who bred search and rescue dogs, she moved to the small town of Cuervo to spend time in the dry, rugged wilderness near Big Bend National Park. When she and her dog, Huck, discover an abandoned camp during a volunteer search and rescue mission, she feels lost, but carefully photographs it nonetheless.

All Grant Wycoff can see when he looks at Ava is a city girl, in her designer jeans and gleaming car, who has no place in a serious crew of seasoned outdoorsmen and retired cops. But when she tells him about her finding her way, he sees that there is more to her than meets the eye.

Ava’s discovery reminds Grant of the cold case of a young woman who disappeared two years ago. As they look further into the camp, another woman mysteriously disappears. With time running out, Ava and Grant must battle the brutal heat of the Texas sun and their own electrical chemistry to crack the case.

Vanishing Hour is Laura Griffin’s latest book. I know her books will offer an engaging story with strong female heroines. She balances her stories with great ease with deep mystery, page-turning suspense and believable romance. Her research really makes each story more believable. Vanishing Hour includes a search and rescue dog. I found this aspect very interesting. There is much more than having a good dog.

Ava Burch is a metropolitan attorney who moved to the small town of Cuervo, Texas. Her father recently passed away and she has her search and rescue dog, Huck. Ava balances between working at a small-town law firm with her friend and doing search and rescue with Huck. She meets Grant Wycoff, a local detective, as she searches for a missing person in Big Ben National Park. They find the old man they were looking for, but Ava also finds an abandoned campground suspicious. She finds a set of car keys and a trunk, things you wouldn’t leave behind.

She takes photos and writes down the coordinates. The only one who really takes her seriously is Grant. When she takes him to the abandoned camp, they find that he is gone. He appears to be related to several missing women. Ava and Grant use their own abilities to solve the puzzle. As a detective, Grant doesn’t give Ava any details, but she uses her investigative skills to give him any information she finds. Although Grant doesn’t want her involved, he takes her information seriously.

This book held my interest from start to finish. The mystery was captivating and made me turn the pages. I followed every twist and turn without guessing the culprit. If this was just a police thriller I would have been perfectly satisfied, but the romance was the icing on the cake. Both Ava and Grant faced personal issues as they tried to navigate search and rescue operations and solve the mystery of the missing girls. The supporting characters were just as important as the main characters and I hope their stories are told.

I have read all of Mrs. Griffin’s books and she has been on my list of cars to buy for quite some time. She writes fantastic characters, incredible suspense, and creates a world that I can immerse myself in. I highly recommend this new book.

An unsolved case, multiple disappearances, a sheriff’s deputy, a search and rescue dog, and a former corporate attorney all come together in one great romantic thriller. Laura Griffin’s Vanishing Hour has the perfect mix of romance, suspense, crime investigation, mystery and action to capture and hold the reader’s interest. Ava Burch left corporate law work to do business with her friend Jenna of hers. His is the only law firm in Cuervo, Texas.

She also volunteers for search and rescue with her dog Huck. Grant Wycoff is a sheriff’s deputy who doesn’t think Ava has any place in a team of outdoorsmen, rangers, and police officers on a serious search-and-rescue mission. However, Ava and Huck find more than they bargained for and must work with Grant when another person goes missing.

Both Ava and Grant really have strong work ethics and integrity. However, Ava’s father was a ranger who was frequently away from home, and eventually he and his mother divorced. This, along with his death and the resulting pain and unresolved issues, affects how Ava perceives law enforcement officers. Grant cares deeply about people, but is subject to frequent phone calls that can disrupt plans.

However, he seemed too quick to judge Ava on her choice of clothing and her vehicle rather than the facts. That seemed more annoying to me than Ava, who felt out of place for her. Their chemistry slowly grew as they got to know each other better. The other characters had different depths depending on the role. Ava’s friend Jenna’s struggle with her father’s Alzheimer’s will resonate with many readers. I felt that Sheriff Donovan’s attitude needed an adjustment that never materialized.

This book has a solid mystery with some twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing. Friendship, lies, deceit, disappearances, romance, family, pain and much more are the focus of this story. The world building is excellent. Readers will feel the heat, see the downtown shops, connect with the well-developed and relatable main characters, and feel like they’re joining Ava and Huck on search and rescue missions. My only problem is that there was some telling versus showing thing.

Overall, this riveting and entertaining romantic thriller has wonderful characterization, a bit of spice, and great action. Lovers of romantic suspense novels will probably like this book. one has the perfect combination of mystery, suspense, action and romance.
