A twisted and gripping new novel about a woman’s complicated relationship with her mother-in-law that ends in death…

From the moment Lucy met her husband’s mother, she knew that she was not the woman Diana had envisioned for her perfect son. Exquisitely polite, kind and always generous, Diana kept Lucy at a distance from her despite her desperate attempts to win her over. And as a pillar of the community, an advocate for refugee women, and a woman who’s been happily married for decades, no one said a bad thing about Diana…except Lucy.

That was five years ago.

Now that Diana is dead, a suicide note was found near her body that said she wanted to live longer because the cancer was wreaking havoc on her body.

But the autopsy finds no cancer.

She finds traces of poison and signs of suffocation.

Who could want Diana dead? Why did she change her will at the last hour to disinherit both her children and her spouse? And what does it mean that Lucy isn’t exactly sad because she’s gone?

Broken relationships and deep family secrets become more intriguing with each page of this gripping and twisted new novel from Sally Hepworth.

Lucy lost her mother to cancer at a young age. Since then, she always thought that she would have another chance if she married to have a motherly relationship with her husband’s mother. But it’s not meant to be. Ollie’s mother, Diana, is not a warm and friendly person. Instead, she is distant and cold, showing almost no interest in her children or her classmates.

Even if Lucy thinks she’s done something that will bring her and Diana closer, she’s wrong. When Diana gives her a special necklace for her on her wedding day, something she borrowed from her, Lucy is touched until Diana emphasizes that it is only borrowed and she hopes it will be returned to her.

Sure, the grandchildren will make a difference, but the only difference is that Diana ignores Lucy’s wishes about how children should be raised and she does what she thinks is best. Diana and her husband Tom are rich, but they don’t even think about helping their children financially, like a down payment on the house or even health problems. Diana believes that she and Tom went their own way and the children should too.

But now that Diana is dead, the police tell the family that it could have been a suicide since they found a note. But there are unanswered questions. Diana told everyone that she had breast cancer, but there is no record of it in her medical records and no sign of it in the autopsy. Next to her body was a bottle of drugs commonly used for suicide, but again there is no sign that they are on the body. Diana changed her will just before her death and instead of her sons Ollie and her sister Nettie receiving the inheritance they have been waiting for their entire lives, the entire estate will be donated to charity. .

Now the police assume it was murder rather than suicide and that the killer must be a family member. Are you okay?

Sally Hepworth is an Australian author who has made a name for herself in the publishing world. She specializes in family dramas that contain a bit of mystery. Readers will recognize each character’s type as someone they’re familiar with, and the inevitability of Diana’s death and the fallout from it make for a compelling read. This book is recommended for readers of mystery or women’s literature.

When Lucy met her mother-in-law, Diana, she had high hopes that they would have a close and loving relationship. After losing her own mother to cancer when she was thirteen, Lucy desperately searched for a mother figure in her life. While Lucy immediately bonded with Ollie’s father Tom, it definitely wasn’t the same with Diana. They did not have the mother-daughter relationship she hoped for, and for the next decade their relationship remained tumultuous.

When the police knock on Ollie and Lucy’s door one night to tell them that Diana has died, they are both shocked. They said it appeared to be a suicide, but when homicide detectives showed up at her door to question her, it was clear that police no longer believe Diana caused her own death.

Although Lucy and Diana did not have the best relationship, Lucy knew that Diana loved her family. Of course, she wouldn’t want to hurt her mother-in-law, but there are plenty of people in Diana’s life who would. And it seems that Diana herself was not entirely honest. The breast cancer that she was apparently battling seemed non-existent. Why would someone lie about being terminally ill?

Questions about Diana’s death are still up in the air. And the secrets of this family begin to seep through the cracks. If Lucy, the person who apparently had the greatest motive to murder Diana, did not kill her, who is to blame for Diana’s death?

The Mother-In-Law is Sally Hepworth’s latest family novel. I’ve seen quite a few books about mothers-in-law lately, some mediocre. But Mother-in-Law was masterfully written and kept me hooked from start to finish. Told through Diana and Lucy’s “past” and “present” perspectives, a picture is drawn of their life and their complicated relationship. This is my first Sally Hepworth reading, but it certainly won’t be my last.
