IMPRESSIVE!! Ellen Marie Wiseman, author of The Lost Girls of Willowbrook, has brought to life the terrifying nightmare of Willowbrook’s institutional life. I have read all of Ellen Marie Wiseman’s novels and the author is quite a “master” at bringing her characters, events and landscapes to life through her writing. The Lost Girls of Willowbrook is one of his strongest books and I still tremble at some scenes. This is definitely a memorable and thought provoking book that I would recommend to other readers. It is so incredible that it took years to close after Robert Kennedy visited and Geraldo Rivera explained the conditions.
The timeline for this story is set in the early years 1970’s. The genres of this story are historical fiction, historical mystery, and coming-of-age fiction. The author describes that the characters as complex and complicated. Some are bold and bold, and some are petty and cruel. Some employees are overworked and overwhelmed, others are indifferent.
One of the story’s protagonists is Sage Winters, a 16-year-old girl who overhears her stepfather arguing that her “deceased” twin sister Rosemary is not dead but missing in Willowbrook. Sage boards a bus and heads to what she thinks is a school to look for her sister.
On the bus to Willowbrook, Sage closes her eyes and someone steals her bag. When she arrives at the school, some staff and the psychiatrist believe Sage is the missing “Rosemary” and Sage is now becoming a “PATIENT”. No matter how Sage tries to convince everyone that she’s not Rosemary, they ignore her. Sage is now living the nightmare. Can you imagine the dangers and horrors that await saga? Previously, Sage had only heard rumors about Willowbrook.
Ellen Marie Wiseman has written a heartbreaking, unforgettable and thought-provoking novel that explores the importance of kindness, love, compassion and hope. It is essential reading!
