Two truths and a lie. Vivian, Natalie, Allison and Emma played it all the time at her cabin at Camp Nightingale. But the games ended that night, with Emma sleepily watching the others slip away in the dark. The last thing she, or anyone else, saw of the teens was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her and pressing a finger to Emma’s lips…

Fifteen years later, Emma is a rising star on the New York art scene, turning her past into paintings: huge canvases of dark leaves and gnarled branches over ghostly forms dressed in white. When the wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale learns of her paintings, she begs Emma to return to the newly opened camp as a painting teacher.

Despite her guilt and fear of her, or maybe because of it, Emma agrees to reconsider her past. Nightingale looks the same as he did all those years ago, haunted by a midnight lake and familiar faces. Emma is even assigned the same cubicle she slept in as a teenager, though the security camera pointed at her door is an unsettling novelty.

As cryptic clues to the camp’s origins emerge, Emma tries to discover what really happened to her friends. But its closure could come at a deadly cost.

Emma, 27, is a rising star on the New York art scene. Her paintings, described in such detail that she could imagine them, tell a traumatic story of her life, a story that she cannot put into words. At Emma’s first major gallery showing, she is surprised when Francesca Harris-White, the wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale, approaches her.

Emma’s experience at Camp Nightingale 15 years ago did not end well, and she is surprised by Franny’s invitation to return as an art teacher. Hoping to find closure and perhaps solve a mystery, Emma reluctantly returns to upstate New York and is surprised when she is assigned to live in Dogwood with three teenage campers. This cabin holds so many haunting memories that Emma wonders if she has the courage to stay.

15 years ago, Emma shared the Dogwood with three older girls: Vivian, Allison, and Natalie. Clearly the alpha female, Vivian took the naïve Emma under her wing. Despite warnings from another camper that Vivian was hitting on her, Emma idolized the girl, who called herself Emma’s older sister. The fun came to an abrupt end one night when Emma watched as her three bunkmates slunk out of the cabin, leaving Emma behind. The three girls were never found.

Despite being closed for 15 years, Camp Nightingale hasn’t changed, has it? the dogwood is the same; the forest and the lake transmit the same mystery; Emma even teaches her roommates Two Truths and a Lie, a game she played endlessly years ago. But what about the motion-sensitive camera outside the Dogwood entrance? is she monitored? If so, why? Is she still suspected of harming Vivian, Ashley and Natalie who were never found?

Riley Sager meticulously weaves a narrative blending past and present. He takes me back to the days of Camp Ligonier: the horrible food, the activities, the campfires with s’mores, the creepy surroundings, even the crushed lifeguard. Chapter by chapter, he really creates three-dimensional characters that are recognizable to me. I wonder all the time if Emma’s story is repeating itself.

What sets THE LAST TIME I LIED apart from other psychological thrillers is its realism. Riley Sager really brings the characters and the Camp Nightingale to life. Once I started reading I couldn’t put the book down until the end, which I never saw coming. My normally precise amateur investigative skills fell by the wayside. A week later, Camp Nightingale is still alive for me.
