Despite being closed for 15 years, Camp Nightingale hasn’t changed, has it? the dogwood is the same; the forest and the lake transmit the same mystery; Emma even teaches her roommates Two Truths and a Lie, a game she played endlessly years ago. But what about the motion-sensitive camera outside the Dogwood entrance? is she monitored? If so, why? Is she still suspected of harming Vivian, Ashley and Natalie who were never found?
Riley Sager meticulously weaves a narrative blending past and present. He takes me back to the days of Camp Ligonier: the horrible food, the activities, the campfires with s’mores, the creepy surroundings, even the crushed lifeguard. Chapter by chapter, he really creates three-dimensional characters that are recognizable to me. I wonder all the time if Emma’s story is repeating itself.
What sets THE LAST TIME I LIED apart from other psychological thrillers is its realism. Riley Sager really brings the characters and the Camp Nightingale to life. Once I started reading I couldn’t put the book down until the end, which I never saw coming. My normally precise amateur investigative skills fell by the wayside. A week later, Camp Nightingale is still alive for me.
