The night they really go missing, high school seniors Nicole Cutty and Megan McDonald are at a beach party in their small town of the Emerson Bay, North Carolina. The police launch a massive search, but all hope is almost lost, until Megan escapes from a bunker deep in the woods. . . . A year later, the best-selling account of her ordeal made Megan a celebrity. It’s a triumphant story, except for one awkward detail: Nicole is still missing.

Nicole’s older sister, Livia, a forensic pathology worker, hopes that one day Nicole’s body will be found and her sister’s fate determined.

Instead, the first clue comes from another corpse: that of a young man connected to Nicole’s past. Livia turns to Megan to find out more about that fateful night. Other girls have disappeared and she is increasingly sure that the cases are related.

Megan knows more than she reveals in her book. Memories point to something more monstrous than she described. And the more she and Livia dig, the more they realize that sometimes the real terror is finding exactly what you’re looking for. . .

The Girl Who Was Taken is another amazing story from my new favorite author, Charlie Donlea.

Another Amazon.com reviewer I follow wrote an excellent review of one of this author’s books last month that convinced me to check out this author’s work. I have since read Suicide House, Some Choose Darkness, Summit Lake, and The Girl Who Was Kidnapped. I already bought Don’t Believe It and will read it next.

The author is really adept at providing red herrings and other techniques to help the reader guess who the killer is. I’m usually pretty good at figuring out the killer in murder mysteries early on, but this and all of his other books blew me away.

The author’s character development is remarkable. I feel like I know all the characters well and love to hate the bad guys and hope the good guys survive.

In this story, Nicole Cutty, the little sister of the protagonist Dr. Livia Cutty, who is studying to be a coroner, a missing person.

The author fully develops Nicole’s character as a good girl gone bad. She has made enough enemies to create a list of possible suspects willing to harm her.

The night Nicole was kidnapped, so was Megan McDonald. Megan was the daughter of a sheriff. Megan’s academic and athletic achievements and a mentor of hers made her star shine and really shine as she escaped her ordeal. Smothered by her parents and others, she puts off her scholarship to Duke and is in therapy while she writes her book, which climbs the best-seller list.

As Nicole fades from memory in the shadow of Megan’s fame, Livia befriends her and asks her to do what no one else has considered: help Livia find out what happened to her sister. She seizes the opportunity and the results are impressive.

This is such a well-written and satisfying story that I had a hard time putting it down. It was fascinating!

The author captured my emotions and spun me around in my chair, panting and gesticulating as if I were on the scene and part of the action.

I recommend this captivating story to family, friends, and others who are looking for a gripping crime thriller that grabs the reader and doesn’t let go until the last word.
