The right words can change everything. . .

The holidays haven’t been good for their marriage, but Natasha and Rob’s renewed romance is short-lived when her daughter’s beloved stuffed animal goes missing on the drive home. As Natasha comforts her distraught son, she turns to social media for help. Miraculously, she finds the toy, but it has become the happy pet of a man named Duffy who travels thousands of miles in Nepal.

When Duffy promises to update Natasha with photos, he begins a correspondence that soon makes sense. Sometimes Natascha gets the feeling that this stranger from the other side of the world understands her better than the man lying next to her.

But as the weeks go by and Duffy heads deeper into the mountains, Natasha notices a change in him. Then one day the news stops. Too late, Natasha wonders why she ever needed a happy pet in the first place.

The Last Summer is the first book in The Wild Isle Girls, a five-volume historical series set in the dramatic evacuation of the Scottish island of St Kilda in the summer of 1930. It was inspired in part by Karen’s Scottish roots: family from her father came from Skye and moved to Fort William, where Karen was baptized and where many of her family still live. Her childhood memories are filled with Christmas, Hogmanay and summer vacations in the Highlands and she got married there in 2001.
