I’m not sure if I’ve read anything by this author before, but I’ll certainly read more in the future. Like many other readers, I have always been fascinated by World War II and devour many books about that period in a year. This one revolves around Genevieve, a famous singer and darling of the Nazis.

Also known as the Black Swan, she has been secretly helping Max, a British spy, gather information to send to his superiors. She met him in Casablanca and they seemed headed towards a romance until he started manipulating her and using her for information. Since then, several years before the beginning of the book, Genevieve has upset him, and their relationship is often acrimonious.

As the story begins, Genevieve and her companion are in Paris, where she’s performing to a full audience and Max is busy doing his thing behind the scenes. We learn more about Genevieve’s tragic backstory and how it shaped it. She is separated from her family for reasons we are beginning to learn, but all of that is about to change. An exciting book that deserved overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Brilliantly atmospheric, wonderfully complex and beautifully written, The Black Swan of Paris is a superb historical novel from the immensely talented pen of Karen Robards.
