This is a great book from start to finish. What sets it apart is the realism displayed throughout the book regarding Chicago politics. It is 100% correct. I am a former Chicago resident, born and raised, and have witnessed firsthand many of the political activities highlighted in the book. The characters in the book are so real that it feels like reading a newspaper analysis of current events. I like David Ellis, but I tend not to read James Patterson. In this book they are great. Without going into spoilers, but to authenticate realism they talk about a “Chinese” who is nothing more than a political patron, but when have you read that in a novel?
This is the true Chicago term for a political patron and has been used for decades. The entire book uses the correct terminology for streets and places, which adds to the enjoyment. The book moves so fast and it’s hard to put it down once you start reading. It is simply a great book. I highly recommend it, especially for current and former Chicago residents.

Everyone assumes (correctly) that a lost black book, which may or may not literally be black or a book, was being kept by the wife of a fancy brothel frequented by prominent Chicagoans. It would include the names of customers and police who allowed the business to operate in exchange for payment. You can really see why a lot of people want to get the black book. At least one of them is a murderer.
The story, which alternates between the present and the past, begins with the discovery of three gunshot victims in the bedroom of a luxury condominium. Two are dead: a police officer and a prosecutor. The third victim barely survives but has no recollection. He is detective Billy Harney, our protagonist, the son of an important policeman and the twin brother of a policeman. Forensics identifies him as the perpetrator.
Shortly before that, Billy raided this brothel. Among those arrested were mayor and also the archbishop. Will the case be dismissed really because Billy did not have a probable cause for warrant?
Billy is tried for the murder of the two women in the apartment, as well as the lady and a policeman. (Let’s say he was intimate with the two women who were murdered in the condo.) After a violent encounter, his memory is restored. He can testify to what happened in the apartment. It is not what the reader expects.
As a former Chicago Police News reporter, I enjoyed revisiting the Windy City. Each chapter ends with a bang. But the timeline is hard to believe. Two major trials seem to start almost immediately after the indictment. Justice is not as quick in Chicago or anywhere else.
