It’s summer on the Riviera and the jazz age has arrived on the once-quiet beaches of France. From its music-filled terraces, American expats along the coast gaze at the lights of Monte Carlo, where fortunes are made, lost, stolen and sometimes hidden. When Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes arrive, they find their partnership torn between youthful joys and old sins, hot sun and fresh jazz, new affections and abiding loyalties.

Russell makes easy friends with a scheming American couple, Sara and Gerald Murphy, whose golden life on the Riviera has begun to attract famous writers and artists, and some of the villains connected to the Monte Carlo underworld.

Murphy’s set would go on to inspire everyone from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Pablo Picasso, but in this summer of 1925 its importance to Russell lies in one of the most recent additions to his circle: the Holmes’s former housekeeper, the Mrs Hudson, who has not been seen since she fled England under a cloud of false accusations of murder.

When a handsome young man is found dead in Mrs. Hudson’s living room, she becomes the prime suspect in another murder. Russell is certain of Mrs. Hudson’s innocence; She is not Holmes. But the old woman’s colorful past has been a source of tension between them before, and now the dangerous gamblers who control Monte Carlo’s gilded casinos can stop at nothing to keep the pair from what Ms. Hudson’s youthful life may bring. it was all that history could bring to history. light.

The Riviera is a place where treasure can be wrong, where love can be destructive and where, as Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes will discover, life can be cheap, even if it’s made of solid gold.

This is the sixteenth book in the series starring Sherlock Holmes and his much younger wife, Mary Russell. It picks up where the last episode left off with Mary and Sherlock in Venice, but the scene changes immediately as Mary leaves for the French Riviera and Sherlock leaves for Romania. The book is set in Cap D’Antibes, Antibes and Monte Carlo and the setting is a real bonus.

Since the book is set in the summer of year 1925, it’s really fun to see the Riviera and Monte Carlo in the jazz age. As with many previous books, there are occasional cameos from famous figures such as Picasso, Zelda, and Scott Fitzgerald. They are not important, but their performances are a bit funny. The premise of this book is the mysterious and premeditated disappearance of Mrs. Hudson, and that’s where I got stuck.

I found that Mrs. Hudson’s backstory didn’t particularly interest me. To make matters worse, this backstory is confusingly told mostly through floating conversations between Mrs. Hudson and Lily Langtry. Mary also seemed particularly immature in this episode as she seemed to be competing with Sherlock Holmes rather than working with him to find the truth.

The plot itself, with murders, smuggling, artists, Russian arms dealers, and refugees from the Russian Revolution who may or may not have stolen Russian gold, is complex and interesting. While this book wasn’t my favorite of the series, it’s still more good than annoying.

Shortly after the events of the previous novel (Island of Fools), Mary arrives in the south of France, sailing there with a group of friends while her husband Sherlock leaves the Romanian wilderness on her own. Mary has barely regained her legs when she is suddenly shocked to discover that Holmes’s former housekeeper, Mrs Hudson, who left Sussex under depressing circumstances (Mary Russell’s murder), is working as a nanny! Miss Clarissa Hudson, no longer known as Mrs. Clara Hudson, has a sleek bob haircut and stylish clothes.

She has happily embarked on a new life in Monaco, one with some surprising aspects. Mary is determined to find out what caused this change, and when a young man is found murdered in Clarissa’s living room, the investigation into Clarissa’s life becomes urgent. Fortunately, Sherlock appears to be helping with the effort, as the trail leads the pair down a winding path involving exiled Russian aristocracy, international arms dealers, smugglers, Lily Langtry, and Pablo Picasso.

This is a fun start to an entertaining series of novels about a semi-retired Sherlock Holmes and his much younger protégé, Mary Russell, becoming women in the Roaring Twenties. This series has a very strong narrative arc that jumps around a bit. It would be ideal to read the series in order from the beginning, but for this particular novel it would be particularly important to read Murder of Mary Russell and Mad Island to follow the story.
