The Westerley Research Center is not for the faint of heart. A “body farm” that studies human decomposition, its occupants are corpses in various states of decomposition. But when Detective Kim Stone and her team discover a young woman’s freshly made corpse, it seems like a killer has found the perfect cover to bury his crime.

Then a second girl is attacked and left for dead, her body drugged and her mouth full of dirt. Stone and the team know a serial killer is at work, but how many bodies will they discover? And who’s next?

When local reporter Tracy Frost goes missing, the stakes are raised. The past seems to hold the key to the killer’s secrets, but can Kim uncover the truth before a twisted and damaged mind claims another victim?

Oh my. Is it possible that it’s true? Can you please? Yes you can! Ms. Marsons has given her faithful readers Play Dead, Book #4 in the brilliant D.I. Kim Stone series.

My God, I lack the superlatives for this author and her books. He always comes up with a great storyline that leaves me and probably the vast majority of his readers (and I went to high school!) stunned. She presents little clues and just when I think I have the answers, they take me in a whole different direction. There are many surprises in this story; At one point there are 3 significant little twists within 4 pages. I felt like I was trying to walk through a minefield!

As with every episode, we learn more about Kim and what makes her who she is. Not warm and fuzzy but someone I can easily admire and respect and even love. I found the arc starring Kim and obnoxious reporter Tracy Frost to be a highlight. We’re getting more from Barney and Daniel Bate (there’s a little spark there); and his wonderful colleagues Bryant, Stacey and Dawson. One small request, can we find out more about Stacey, Mrs. Marsons? I would be happy about a further development.

As usual, the pace of the story is steady as it progresses and the writing style is excellent.
I felt that the author was particularly creative with her red herrings this time, so readers should take precautions not to be overly impressed with themselves when they think they’ve figured things out. The ending was very good. And I think it says something when my eyes filled with tears after the last chapter, not only because of the last scene but also because I had reached the end.

Cons of this novel: Are you kidding me? none.

Mrs. Marsons has easily taken her place in my very exclusive writer’s retreat. I would highly recommend his books to any reader interested in spectacular plots and outstanding characterization. Well done Mrs. Marsons!

DI Kim Stone and her team are sent to the new carcass farm to learn more about what they are doing there. All Kim can think about are the new suitcases piled on their desks and falling apart while they’re on this field trip. There, Kim notices something strange. What they discover is a dead body that doesn’t belong there.

Meanwhile, Kim becomes interested in “Bob” due to a call from an annoying and annoying reporter. It’s an unsolved case of an unknown man who was murdered without his fingers. A review of his autopsy shows that his pacemaker was removed.

A second body is found at the corpse farm, but this woman is alive. She is in the hospital in a coma. A friend comes to the hospital and identifies her. Then another body is found. She was buried but died in the same way as the first wife.

Clues come fast and furious, and the team has a viable case on their hands. When the reporter who originally called Kim goes missing, the team fears the worst. The last pieces of the puzzle fit together and the hunt begins.

Another body is found. This time a man was missing his hands. This case is related to the “Bob” case three years ago. What is the connection between men?

The killer comes as a surprise. It’s more than a little ironic. The reason for the murders lies deep in the past.

This book is very well written and encapsulated. It’s action packed and fast. I enjoy the relationships between Kim, Bryant, Stacy and the rest of the Kev team. You will enjoy this book as I have enjoyed all of Angela Marsons novels. It is really refreshing to read such a text. I can’t wait to dive into the next part of the series.
