Snowing in a luxurious, rustic ski chalet high in the French Alps doesn’t seem like the worst problem in the world. Especially when there are stunning views, a full-service chef and housekeeper, a cozy fire to keep you warm, and others to keep you company. Unless this company has eight employees… everyone has something to gain, something to lose, and something to hide.

When the co-founder of Snoop, a trendy London tech startup, organizes a week-long trip to the French Alps for the team, it begins as a corporate retreat like any other: PowerPoint presentations and strategy sessions, punctuated by mandatory bonding at the slopes But as soon as a shareholder changes the agenda by proposing a lucrative but controversial takeover bid, tensions boil and loyalty is tested.

However, the storm brewing inside the chalet can’t match the outside, and a devastating avalanche cuts the group off from any access to the outside world. Worse yet, a snooper hadn’t made it away from the slope when he hit the avalanche.

As each hour passes with no sign of rescue, panic mounts, the chalet grows colder, and the group continues to shrink…one by one.

I really enjoyed the contrast between the narrators: one is a bit of a loner and very perceptive, and the other is socially awkward and has a hard time picking up on social cues. One feels that she is not in control at all, and the other is calm, cool and collected. One is self-aware and in charge of his life, has a very objective understanding of how his choices relate to his consequences, and the other is the ultimate victim.

I really liked the characters; they were very different and I liked how Ruth brought out the face of privilege and entitlement. Some characters are genuinely unsympathetic and quite amoral. So at one point, it’s interesting to see the power struggle when these characters find themselves on the other side of the plans.

Since I wasn’t familiar with skiing, I was able to follow the book except for a few terms that I had to google. The atmosphere was great: I felt like I was in this chalet and I could understand the app as if it were real. He did a great job behind the scenes creating the concept of the app and the company page. It felt 100% real like it was a real app launching tomorrow.

As always, I can’t put his books down. Ruth is excellent at capturing the reader and keeping them engaged with her narrative. I attribute this largely to how nice and human she makes her characters. she works for me

I will also always mention how clean she plays. I literally feel this care in writing her. I know some people said this book was predictable, I get it. I could tell who. But what I love about her books is that it’s both crime fiction and madness. And it doesn’t always wait until the end to discover the culprit, nor does it take longer than necessary. Who to reveal is organic to the narrative, and so is why.

Compared to previous Ruth Ware novels, this is a slightly different feel.

Comparisons have been made between Ruth Ware and Agatha Christie, and it’s evident here again. Trade a secluded island off the Devon coast for a secluded chalet in the alpine ski resort of Saint Antoine. Then replace the cast with the shareholders and directors of a high-tech startup at odds over a quality takeover. Now you have the ingredients for a locked room-style mystery in the spirit of And Then There Were None. All you need is for the guests to start getting to know your creator in advance…et voilà! The scene is set for a classic police thriller.

But what makes it so good is that it’s not just a classic-style crime thriller. This story shows a different side of Ruth Ware’s arsenal as it builds into a tight, tense and suspenseful thriller. The author adds taking full advantage of environmental factors to create a claustrophobic atmosphere.

Ruth Ware has an uncanny ability to create environments and characters that are completely authentic and believable, if not always likeable. As a result, it is very easy to get sucked into the scenery she is painting. In One by One, she also encapsulates these aspects and enriches them with her own seemingly effortless storytelling style.

If you’ve already enjoyed Ruth Ware’s books, you’ll love this one too. If she has read her work and is still not convinced, then this may give some readers pause.
