NOEL STREET by Richard Paul Evans
thoughts of a reader.
It has been my privilege and honor to serve as Executive Producer on Richard Paul Evans’ Christmas film series Mistletoe for Hallmark Channel, with THE MISTELTOE SECRET scheduled to air November 10th. My energies as a TV Movie Producer are now focused on the “Noel” series with THE NOEL DIARY in development at Netflix.

The author has kindly provided me with his third “Noel” novel, NOEL STREET, due for release on November 5th this year. In this story, Evans takes the reader back to 1975 with Christmas, as the Vietnam War draws to a close, the United States faces political turmoil, racism, and a search for normality. Sound familiar? These are some of my thoughts that will hopefully lead all fans and potential new readers of Richard Paul Evans to the internet to buy this novel, treasured in millions of private libraries around the world.

The story of NOEL STREET is told by Elle Sheen, a waitress at Mistletoe Diner in the small town of Mistletoe, Utah. She is a single white mother of a black child in a town with no other African Americans. Her heart was broken by the loss of her husband in Vietnam and her family abandoned her for daring to love a black man. Her love is for her seven-year-old son, Dylan, who reciprocates her effusive affection. Enter her life William Smith, a newcomer to Mistletoe and an auto repair shop where he will soon repair Elle’s 1957 Ford Fairlaine.

William is a handsome and strong but emotionally damaged Vietnam veteran who suffers from uncontrollable bouts of PTSD. An instant physical attraction between Elle and William leads them to a powerful self-discovery of their lives, which have been affected by racism and war. Love is the only force that can overcome their damaged lives and souls, and it holds its own as Christmas approaches. I leave the reader to explore and embrace the fears and beauty of this extraordinary drama.

Personally, I’ve been a Vietnam combat veteran since 1968, the year of peak troop levels and peak casualties. A year that changed the United States forever with the assassination of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy. I returned home to a country where I couldn’t mention my military service without knowing if they would shake my hand or spit in my face. The story of NOEL STREET has touched my personal experience, but I believe its brilliance transcends my life experience and will touch the minds and hearts of all readers who understand the healing power of love and define the best potentials in our lives.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without a new Christmas Carol by Richard Paul Evans. This year’s book is Noel Street.

Set in the year 1975, Noel Street introduces us to Elle, a very widowed mother of the young Dylan. She barely survives on her waitress check. If your car breaks down again, you don’t know how to pay for the repair. But William, a mechanic who’s new in town and a Vietnam veteran, will fix it for free to repay the kindness she’s shown him.

And yes, you can see it coming, right? And this is what I’ve been waiting for: the slowly building attraction, the meeting of two wounded souls, the complications that arise between them, and…hopefully a happy ending. It is very comforting to listen to these kinds of books at Christmas. (And the book also takes place on Christmas)

Both protagonists have not come to terms with their past, do not forgive themselves and have trouble living in the present. Love, loss, family, friends, forgiveness and redemption all play a role in Evans’ story.

I really liked both characters and Dylan was a delight. I liked the “historical” setting. I don’t think the story would have worked if written today. Evans really knows about his audience and also his writing reflects that. I found the story’s “villain,” The Ketchup Lady, to be a little over the top. I really appreciated the supporting players, especially Fran and the restaurant team.
