Merideth White lives in San Francisco, was once a huge movie star, but has become a recluse since her 14-year-old son was killed in a boating accident. She rarely leaves the house, although she stays in shape and has overcome grief. Hers She has a partner of hers who lives with her and maintains the house and grounds, cooks, and does the shopping. They have worked for her since her son died about 14 years ago and have always been kind to her.
Although she Merideth does not know what was stolen from her. They get some money out of what she gives them for bills and groceries, and although Merideth was in a state of depression, she didn’t notice all the things that went missing from her home, like high-quality artwork that was used to hang the common areas, but have since moved into Debbie and Jack’s suite.
When a major earthquake hits San Francisco, Merideth’s house is largely unscathed. She also has a backup generator, so hers is the only house in the neighborhood with electricity. Merideth invites her neighbors to come and stay, as her houses are damaged and unsafe.
You can tell right away that there will be drama. One of the neighbors is a surgeon and has anger issues that are shown early in the book. His wife has bruises and the children distrust him when he is in a bad mood.
The guy is a classic bully and he doesn’t even try to hide it. He even immediately accuses his wife of the flirting with other guys and puts her down whenever he can. I was married to a guy like him, even though my husband was a great guy among other people, so you know, if this guy doesn’t bother to hide his anger, there’s bound to be trouble with a lot of people who stay in one. place together.
Another neighbor is a famous blind pianist and his hired assistant, and a businessman who has made it big in a couple of high-tech start-ups and has an ego as big as his checkbook. His new girlfriend is there too, he treats her like a possession. Debbie and Jack aren’t too happy about the house guests, but Merideth once again enjoys her house full of talk and laughter. Debbie and Jack find themselves losing control of their menu as Merideth starts making friends and rejoins society.
I liked the premise and the story itself, but one thing bothered me and surprised me a bit, as this was a Danielle Steel novel and I know she is a well known author with tons of books under her belt. However, I felt that some things were repeated ad nauseam over and over again. For example, Merideth’s daughter, although Merideth was too hard on her ex-husband when her son died and became closer to him.
I read the same thing much more often than necessary. I’m not sure if she kept repeating herself because she really wanted to drive him home, or if it was a way of getting you on Merideth’s side. I know it was me and I was a little mad at her daughter. So if that was a device, then it must have worked!
