Arizona is the setting for the eighth installment of the J.A. Jance, Minor in Possession, starring Seattle homicide detective J.P. Beaumont. I was pleased to learn that the author took Beau to the Grand Canyon State, which is also where the other three mystery series take place. In the previous entry, “Fired With Prejudice,” Beau was diagnosed with an enlarged liver as a result of her fascination with MacNaughton’s blended Canadian whiskey.
So his attorney, Ralph Ames, arranged for him to go to alcohol rehab at Ironwood Ranch near Wickenberg, a small town in the Sonoran desert northwest of Phoenix. The plot unfolds as a result of the death of Beau’s roommate, allegedly by using the detective’s own Smith and Wesson .38 revolver. Jance puts together an intriguing story that includes a significant number of well-defined characters with varied relationships to the deceased. For me, as a professional herpetologist, one of the most interesting stories was Ringo, a captive rattlesnake that used to belong to the victim.
Here, in the previous novels in this series, I thought that J.P. Beaumont was a tough guy who was willing to take on the bad guys in book after book. However, Jance places our hero in his darkened ranch room with the rattlesnake, forcing him out of the cabin through the bathroom window only wrapped in a towel. Oddly enough, at least to me, Beau thinks someone tried to kill him as a result of being killed by a rattlesnake. The snake in question is believed to be the Arizona black rattlesnake, Crotalus cerebrus, a conspicuous animal common in the central mountains of the state, including those associated with the Mogollon Rim.
However, the snake’s range is north of the Wickenberg area, where Ironwood Ranch is located, and thus it is not native. Although the snake is capable of delivering a deadly bite, trying to kill someone by losing them in a room is pretty clumsy. Finally, even if bitten, rattlesnake bites are not immediately fatal and can be successfully treated in a properly equipped hospital. Despite this, the author allowed her character to react stereotypically to the presence of the snake. Many, if not most, people who are not familiar with venomous snakes resort to ignorance when dealing with them.
The assumption is that snakes are evil, although in general snakes are wrong when dealing with humans. Evil is a human trait unmatched among other creatures of the animal kingdom. Rattlesnakes use their venom to secure prey and protect themselves from predators, including humans… period. However, apart from this episode of unrealistic cliffhanger, the rest of the story is fascinating and entertaining. I wholeheartedly recommend this entry in the series and look forward to reading the next in the series, Payment in Kind.
