Still probably the most popular novel published under the name of V C Andrews. I can remember everyone seemed to read it growing up, in fact I know in my immediate family we all read it. So far, that was the only time I’ve read this, but I decided to check it out again and see if it was still any good.

A gothic story with incest and other tropes of the genre, so it’s still a good read, but of course, as there are a number of clichés here, it’s a bit cheesy. Already at the beginning of a car accident, which a police officer tells the grieving family, one cannot help but laugh, because it is not enough that the driver dies in a head-on collision, but the car has to overturn a number of times and catch the light.

There are also a number of holes in the story where the older kids know things they shouldn’t know, such as where the various places in the stranger’s house are that they’re trapped in, and other incidents. This is a story that narrator Cathy, who was only twelve to begin with, remembers, and of course it is the first in a series.

Ultimately a story of skeletons in the family closet, betrayal, greed, forbidden love, and selfishness, along with compassion and growth. There is a lot going on here, and you only need to pay attention to one particular food. As the four children are smuggled into their grandparents’ house, which they have never been to before, they are kept hidden in a wing, locked in a room and in the attic.

Due to the actions of the mother and her half-uncle, the mother was removed from the family will and disowned, but as she tells her children, she strives to appease her father, regain a place in the will, and so she does all rich. But what should be just a few days, and then a week starts to turn into years, so what’s really going on?

Of course considered controversial by some when it was first published, as seems to be the norm in the US, it was originally banned from schools and libraries in some areas, which of course only fueled publicity and meant that more people bought and read this book. than usual, which means the publishers desperately needed a sequel.

As with other books by this author and now by Andrew Neiderman, who took over when Cleo Virginia Andrews died, this book is aimed more at the young adult market and is probably geared a bit more towards girls than boys. Even more so because it contains certain elements of fairy tales.

A real “fairy tale” with a sadistic grandmother, a careless mother, a tragedy at the beginning of the story and a sick grandfather. The four beautiful Dollanger children are locked in an attic, waiting for their cruel grandfather to die before they can be released.

You have to give up faith to enter this story. Consider it a fantasy (albeit a rather disturbing one) and you’ll be as intrigued as I am.
The children, as characters, were believable with human flaws and desires, but ultimately it is their love and faith in each other that helps them “survive”.
