This is the uncompromising story of Ashneer Grover, Start-up India’s most beloved and misunderstood poster child. Raw, heartbreaking in its honesty and wholehearted, this is storytelling at its finest. Dubbed a ‘refugee’ and growing up in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, a young man overcomes his circumstances by becoming a rank holder at the pinnacle of academic excellence at India-IIT Delhi.

He then pursues an MBA in the hallowed halls of IIM Ahmedabad, builds an investment banking career at Kotak Investment Banking and AmEx, and is instrumental in the creation of two unicorns: Grofers as CFO and BharatPe as co-founder. As a judge on the popular TV show Shark Tank India, Ashneer becomes a household name even as her life is turned upside down. Controversy, media attention and chatty chatter on social media are declining, making it difficult to separate fact from fiction.

Doglapan book is raw. I’ve never seen Shark Tank India (having been in the startup world for 15 years, I acknowledge much of this hype as glorified nonsense, an artifact of Fed policy lining the pockets of investors worldwide). I had never heard of Ashneer Grover until someone I know tweeted about him and then I met him at the airport while he was selling his books. Of course no one was at her desk at 7am so I got a copy and signed it.

Doglapan book was good to read. At times I found myself believing her actions to be terrible, and at other times I felt bad for Ashneer. I think the story is honestly told from his own perspective. The story of how he got his Rs. Grofers’ 1 Cr made me wince. It was unethical to lend them a quick hand, especially when the company collapsed and went under. But I give Ashneer five stars for telling the truth and allowing me to judge his character. But you know what goes around comes back… so…

The slander he experienced in BharatPe – I was there and felt his pain reading that part of the book. In fact, my own PTSD and trauma resurfaced, so it was an emotional read for me. I was touched and really felt for him and what he and his family were going through. The scene in India is twisted and instead of getting support, you often come across jealous people who want to shoot you flying. Ashneer ignored her and continued walking.

In my case, I took a small step back, slowed down my work, and calmly walked on. I survived. My work did too, albeit with slow growth. But we still exist and are now committed to sustainable growth rather than a sudden meteoric rise (which I nipped in the bud). Luckily we have a presence outside of India so the slowdown in India didn’t kill me. Ashneer went the route of giving a damn and flying on. But they eventually brought him down in a big way. Although I know it will fly again. It is a matter of time.

In general, I think the author needs time now to reflect and contemplate his own contribution to the mess: his own competitive nature. He paid for a role and that shines through to me in the book. What also shines is that he doesn’t see his own contribution to the circumstances.

Overall, I think Ashneer is very talented at executing specific tasks and has a keen sense of identifying good business cases and value propositions. Therein lay his genius and special talent. Not a visionary founder, but someone who can help develop someone else’s vision into a working reality after believing in the value proposition. You can see that clearly in the book. You probably don’t recognize this in yourself: you are not an abstract dreamer. I can see how the original idea contributors would be upset if they were marginalized by Ashneer.
