I hope you don’t have plans for now; Book 3 of Shaye Archer’s series begins with children of plantation owners being beaten by their parents and attempting to perform a ritual to stop the abuse. The plot quickly moves to Shaye Archer, who was found beaten and abused on the streets of New Orleans nine years ago with no memory of who she was. Thank goodness for Detective Harold Beaumont who rushed her to the hospital and she was adopted by socialite and social worker Corrine Archer and grandpa Pierce Archer and you are hooked.

Shaye has earned her private investigator’s license and is more determined than ever to find out who kidnapped and abused her. When the journals of John Clancy (who was captured at the end of book 2) identify her birth mother’s name, after nine years Shaye is more determined than ever to find out who she is and even why this happened to her. Was it just a sick and evil individual or a cult?

Experience firsthand the strength of Shaye when she is called to the New Orleans Police Department to meet with Internal Affairs Malcolm Frasier. Detective Jackson Lamotte’s partner, Vincent, called IA about possible improper police work in the arrest of John Clancy.

Once again, Hustle, a runaway who is now taken in by Saul at his motel, helps Shaye find out more about Lydia Johnson, Shaye’s birth mother. Jinx also enters another fugitive that Shaye helped. Although her performance is brief, it holds the story together as every step Shaye takes brings her closer to discovering who she could be. Actually, without revealing too much, Shaye’s real name and former place of residence is revealed. Corrine Archer and Eleaonor are also an important part of the story.

It’s hard to get into the story without giving too much away. Detective Harold Beaumont returns to help Jackson and Shaye. The story twists and turns, just when you’re thinking, oh, I could have that, it twists and you feel more suspenseful again. Each page has an unexpected twist that you never saw coming. As I neared the end of the book, I knew there would be much more to Shaye’s Mrs. DeLeon story.

The book and series focus on newly minted private investigator Shaye Archer, but Shaye is no ordinary private investigator, she is the adopted daughter of one of New Orleans’ elite families; and Shaye has a very dark past. What I mean is a dark past, I speak pitch black and extremely scary. Shaye’s past is revealed bit by bit as the series progresses, with each book revealing more of that past and cementing the character as a survivor. Each book in the series also revolves around a new mystery for Shaye to solve. This first book focuses on a nurse who is being stalked by her late husband; a husband she killed.

What I really like about the books and the series is that the characters are believable and the danger is real. Shaye doesn’t have superhuman abilities, but she does have a big heart. It’s a romantic love interest, but it’s not a physical relationship like in book four, it’s pure love. Shaye’s close circle with the first book is that of her mother, Corrine, and her mother’s best friend, Eleanor, who happens to be Shaye’s therapist. The circle of people Shaye trusts expands as the series progresses.
