Daisy Darker is the latest from Alice Feeney and what an amazing mystery! I have supplemented my reading with the unabridged edition of the audiobook narrated by Stephanie Racine.

First, this is definitely a novel I’d recommend reading “cold” for maximum impact.

It’s Halloween and Daisy Darker arrives at Seaglass, her grandmother’s dilapidated house in Cornwall. The house is situated between granite rocks and is only connected to the mainland by a sandy causeway. During high tide it is essentially a private island.

The Darker family gathers for Nana’s 80th birthday for the first time in ten years. Reading a fortune teller many years ago made Nana believe that she would not survive the day. Some of her family members only accepted her invitation because they were desperate for her considerable fortune. As the tide rolls in for hours, mysterious things happen…

“Daisy Darker” has a classic Christie-esque premise, and while I don’t want to get lost in spoiler territory, I just want to once again applaud how brilliant it is.

I have read three of Alice Feeney’s previous novels and she is quickly becoming a must-read author. At the end, Daisy Darker has become my favorite novel. In fact, so is Feeney’s, as confirmed in the credits. She also shares that she first had the idea for this novel in 2015 and it took her five years to write it. Given the complicated plot, I can understand that.

Aside from all the great plot elements, Seaglass and the surrounding landscape were vividly depicted, which added to my sense of immersion in the narrative.

As for the audiobook, Stephanie Racine is one of my favorite narrators. Her voice is rich and clear, and she effortlessly brings the novel and her characters to life. It is always a pleasure to listen to her.

Overall, this is one of my biggest mysteries of 2022. When I got to the last page, I was tempted to skip to the beginning and read again. I can’t wait to share my love for him with my book friends.

Alice Feeney’s previous novel Rock, Paper, Scissors was one of my favorite reads of 2021 and now she’s done it again. “Daisy Darker” should be la crème de la crème in 2022.

As already clear from the synopsis, the basis of the novel is heavily influenced by Agatha Christie’s crime film “And Then There Were None”. As I’ve discussed in other reviews, it’s something of a rite of passage for a mystery writer to produce at least one book based on the Dame Agatha classic. Some do this to good effect, while others leave a lot to be desired – “Daisy Darker” is certainly one of the best examples.

However, it would be too simplistic to call this just a facsimile of Christie’s original. Of course, there are clear echoes of “And Then There Were None”, especially in the setting of the novel, but the hat is also deliberately pointed to other Agatha Christie mysteries: “Crooked House” is one of them in particular, I think. . I found it at various points in the narrative to come to mind. Also, and not for the first time in Alice Feeney’s work, I noticed a sense of atmospheric menace similar to the work of another classic author, Daphne du Maurier.

Regardless of the influences at play, Alice Feeney has once again managed to produce a high-quality crime thriller that is entirely her own. She is quickly becoming one of my must-read authors and I will definitely be back for the next offering from her.
