Once again, Rachel Caine has managed to come up with a story that feels so natural. It’s captivating, it’s exciting, it’s scary, and it’s all so visceral. She writes in conversation, but that doesn’t mean she goes weak on complexity. I am a student and I have a lot of work to do, but I did it in a weekend.

I read this series from the beginning and I have to say that I think this was the best ever. Wolfhunter may have been slower, but this book explains why it was necessary. It’s action-packed and fast-paced, and you won’t be able to put it down without listening to Gwen’s mind. Caine is an artist. She’s never seen a thriller like this series before, and that’s saying something.

The focus on family values, while unconventional, is at the heart of what makes the twists and turns more panic-inducing because the stakes are so high. The characters have grown with their experiences. And boy, does Caine take her for a ride. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. She always leaves you guessing. I can’t wait for someone to make a movie of this. Sandra Bullock as Gwen. Make it possible.

In this fourth installment of the series, Gwen Proctor has become an exceptionally skilled private investigator through the horrors of her past to investigate cases no one else would take. Still vulnerable to her past that haunts her, she’s only getting tougher; in fact, there was a time when I didn’t remember anything like Terminator, when both Sam and Connor told their attackers that they should give up before Gwen caught them. I think it might not be a coincidence that Gwen’s son’s new name is Connor, that’s all I’ll say. Gwen has become something of a Sarah Connor, a fierce tiger mother who will stop at literally anything to bring down anyone who threatens the ones she loves.

Bitter Falls picks up where her Wolfhunter River left off and explores deeper into the cult rabbit holes of rural America. A charismatic minister has gathered around him a devoted following, a group from which no one should escape-until a young woman does, a young woman with a son who may be the fiancé the minister has been waiting for. Her covert efforts to find her entice Gwen to investigate, but once Gwen realizes the trouble she’s caused at an innocent’s doorstep, she can’t walk away from her… no matter the cost.

I think this might be my favorite of this series. It’s been absolutely fascinating to follow the development of Gwen, and the growth of her sons Lanny and Connor, especially Connor, who has a lot to deal with here and is growing up quickly. It ends the “second arc” of the series, the first arc is about Gwen’s husband and this second is about tracking down and exposing the cults and I’m intrigued to see what happens next.
