Smart, hardworking and on her way to be an MBA, Chloe Mills has just one problem: her boss Bennett Ryan. He is demanding, direct, ruthless and absolutely irresistible. A Beautiful bastard.

Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take on an important role in his family’s massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who helped him from abroad would be the beautiful, innocently provocative, utterly angry creature he now has to see every day.

Despite the rumours, he was never someone who had a workplace connection. But Chloe is so alluring that he’s willing to break the rules, or just break them, if it means he can have her. Everywhere in the office.
As their mutual appetites grow to the breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they are willing to lose in order to win each other over.

Originally only available online as The Office by tby789 and read over 2 million times on fanfiction sites, Beautiful Bastard has been extensively updated for its re-release.

Beautiful Bastard was a very good story. I was very fond of both Chloe and Bennett and enjoyed watching their controversial relationship grow into something bigger.

Chloe is an intern at a large company. She has worked in the family business for years. As part of your master’s degree, you will work on a large project that will have a major impact on your professional future. Chloe has been working with Bennett as her boss for the past year (or so) and they often argue, but Chloe knows how to handle him.

Bennett joins the family business after gaining a lot of experience (and a great company representative) abroad. He’s a tough boss and has a very intense work ethic. Bennett knows Chloe is smart and cunning, but something about her annoys him and makes him more of a bastard than he normally would be.

Bennett and Chloe have a perpetually conflicted relationship, which is pretty well described in the opening. Chloe is late for work due to things beyond her control, and while this rarely happens, Bennett makes her life miserable and pushes her to far beyond reasonable limits. One of those things is a last minute presentation at the end of the day. This introduction is important, because during it, Bennett touches Chloe and she reacts… and not negatively. Chloe is terrified of it, not just because Bennett touches her, but because she didn’t hit him the moment she did it… that she longed for it.

The beauty of this story is that it’s a mixed view, so we can see inside Bennett’s head as well. Then it becomes clear relatively quickly that he is very attracted to Chloe and has been fighting for almost the entire time they have been together and her fights were the cause of his extreme attitude towards Chloe. Don’t get me wrong, Bennett is still not a cute boy, but things with Chloe are made worse by fighting her attraction.

Also, both deny mutual attraction, so things are a lot more colorful when it comes to an issue. Things are tough because Chloe and Bennett first deny what they both want and then when they admit it, they both make mistakes that almost cause them to lose each other. Luckily, Bennett and Chloe work things out and come to an agreement that allows them to have HEA both personally and professionally. 😀

That was a very nice story. Bennett was an idiot at first but he didn’t upset me and I quickly found myself encouraging him to find what he wanted and then get his girl. There’s some heartbreak, but it’s not as heartbreaking as I expected. Overall, I really enjoyed the story and would recommend it. 😀
