I’ve been reading Nalini Singh since 2015 and that put her on my car shopping list. As soon as I find out that your book is on pre-order, I’ll buy it. She publishes an average of two books a year, one for each of her main series. Both series should be read to fully understand what is going on. While the second season series could possibly start without the first season, I wouldn’t recommend it.
Alpha Night is the latest installment in his psy-changeling series Season Two, Psy-Changeling Trinity. It continues the story of the Arrows, an elite group of soldiers with terrible powers exploited by one of the former council members, Ming LeBon. He tortured the Arrow kids to form an assassination squad. This book focuses on Ethan Black, a telekinetic who believes he suffers from bug syndrome, where the end result is insanity due to the increased power the syndrome bestows on the victim.
He grew up completely deprived of touch, interaction and feelings from other people. The heroine of the story is Selenka Dulev, Alpha of BlackEdge and a badass everywhere. She is a woman who understands the demands of being an Alpha and puts that above everything else, even her own feelings.
When Ethan and Selenka meet, it’s match-up at first sight. Neither of them could believe what happened, but they are forced to put it on hold to deal with a situation where the empaths and someone is violently manipulating them. Throughout the book, the reader is shown the depth of Ethan’s devotion to Selenka. Ethan has almost given up on life, he believes he is going insane and has plans to prevent it. He sees himself as a murderer and his power can only be used to kill.
He doesn’t see himself as a good person. Ethan doesn’t understand the loyalty of the other Arrows and Aden, the leader of the Arrows. He remains separated, but the group still includes him. Mating with Selenka forces him to see life differently and want to live it. Selenka is really all about being the best alpha for her clan. He puts his life and feelings for his clan on hold, even if it goes against his own needs. Unwilling to trust Ethan, she tries to figure out if he really poses a threat to her clan.
Ethan teaches her that the people who truly care about her stay in her life and don’t feel threatened by her power or expect her to defer to her alpha responsibilities. In the end, they both realized that while the pairing was rare given the circumstances in which it was created, it was something meant for each other. They balance each other out and fit perfectly into each other’s lives.
This book tells the story of the collapse of the psy network and the psy people who become violent and die. Aden and Kaleb attempt to repair the network with new help from Memory. When called to neutralize the damage, Ethan makes a comment about what he sees on the web, which turns out to be something only another person can see. He can use his ability to manipulate light to kill the “bugs” on the web. In the end, it’s still not enough to save the network and some difficult decisions will be made in future books.
Nalini Singh is excellent at continuing a story while also giving her character a story of her own. Each book is slightly different but a sequel so the reader won’t get bored. This was key to continuing and creating the original series without repeating stories. I was hooked on this book and am already looking forward to the next one. While I’m not a fan of cliffhangers, Nalini is an author I like regardless of her cliffhangers.
