Twenty years ago, the rural town of the Wakausa, Indiana was rocked by the brutal murder of the 6-year-old January Jacobs. Margot Davies, also six years old at the time, had lived across the street since January and always felt, “except by the grace of God”, that it was January and not her who was kidnapped that night. Haunted by the tragic crime that has never been solved, Margot moves to Indianapolis to become a reporter, only to return to Wakarusa to care for her beloved uncle, who suffers from dementia at a young age.
Shortly after Margot’s return, 5-year-old Natalie Clark goes missing in a nearby town. Margot is convinced that Natalie’s disappearance has something to do with what happened to January, but it wouldn’t be the first time she’s pursued that theory in a case and derailed her journalistic career. Are there really similarities, or is it Margot’s fault that fuels her obsession? The townspeople seem nice and polite on the surface, but they all seem to be hiding something, turning their backs on Margot and blocking her out as she digs deeper into both cases. Someone wants to stop Margot from getting too close to the truth.
All Good People Here is the debut novel by crime-addicted podcaster Ashley Flowers. Her vast knowledge of true crime clearly went a long way in creating this atmospheric and twisted thriller. Does it give off the JonBenet Ramsey fanfic vibes? Yes, more than a little, but he was obsessed with this case at the time, so I’m looking into it here. The story, with two timelines and two perspectives, is intricately designed and well executed. As other reviewers have pointed out, I also found the ending too abrupt for me. Maybe create a sequel on purpose? I hope so!
All Good People Here intertwines the disappearance and death of a young woman twenty years ago in Wakarusa, Indiana, with the recent disappearance of another young woman in a nearby town. Margot lived across the street, was friends with the first girl, and is now convinced that the current disappearance must be related. As a journalist, Margot takes on the challenge of investigating past and current cases. Possible suspects for her include the family of her childhood friend, as well as strangers and neighbors who were eerily close to the young woman. Margot’s investigation impacts her own life, interfering with her work and her relationship with her uncle she chooses to care for her.
All Good People Here novel was written by a true crime enthusiast (and podcast host). As he read, I could feel parts of the stories that Ashley explored and shared through her podcast in the story that she wove here. These parts felt more like touchstones than recreations, as Ashley does a good job of creating characters and a world around these familiar parts, making it a story of her own. As the story progresses, Margot shifts her investigation to focus on several different suspects as she gathers more information.
As a reader, each of these suspects was vetted, shelved (often with warnings and lingering questions), and often revised, keeping it from feeling like a series of twists and turns just to add to the suspense. As we find out who is responsible for the crimes, the ending was left open in a way that I wouldn’t have chosen, but still made sense for the story.
We spend most of the story with Margot, who is very honest with the reader about what she learns and thinks during the investigation. We also hear from other characters, but those characters are withholding information. As a reader, this always seems strange to me.
