How do I transcribe Venerable Mrs. Sabaa Tahir’s beautifully concise scripture without being effusively incoherent? I’ll do my best…here goes…
If you haven’t started this series yet, I STRONGLY encourage you to do so immediately. It’s an affirmation of relentless hope and possibility in the face of dire and desperate circumstances… a track that is profoundly poignant given the chaotic/uncertain times we currently live in. Right from the start we are thrown straight into chaos. where A Torch Against the Night ended. The rhythm was perfect. There were twists, betrayals and bloodshed… oh my god!
The characters were rich and nuanced. They felt like old friends/nemesis you love and hate. They were excellently made. True to the dichotomy of the real characters, each was rendered in different shades of gray. I hate characters drawn in all white or all black… BRING THE GRADE BABY! Ms. Tahir manages to make you feel empathy and compassion for the antagonists (after seeing what leads them down the path of hate and evil).
I was conflicted (as I’m sure you can see) who was the “victim” and who the wrongdoers…because everyone was entitled to both…and really, isn’t that the hallmark of a well? -written? , Really Visceral Hero/Villain?? Several viewpoints worked. They played the next-person arc so expertly that it made me sad every time a chapter came to an end. The role of Elijah, on the other hand, felt like fodder…or a gross gooey pie filling that could easily have been left out (if not for its usefulness in the last quarter of the book).
It felt like they were using it as a vehicle to push things forward in places where quick plot progression was needed. That was a bit sad as he was and should continue to be an all round player…IMHO.
This delivery was multifaceted. It boasted nefarious geniuses, mischievously violent spirits, seers/augurs, a handful of warlocks, a small amount of romance, twisted revelations, and a LOT of bloody vengeance. What more can you ask for in a book? It’s a dark book in a heartbreaking series and I love every word of it! I will continue to cry out your praises from the tops of the mountains…tops of the mountains, I say, and I truly, deeply and infatuatedly believe that you will too. Go ahead and prove me wrong, I’d love to read all about it.
A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir, the third but not last book in the An Ember in the Ashes series. I love how the book begins with Nightbringer’s point of view! The author gives us an insight into the history of the kingdom and currently the scholars are dying out, but we see that in the past the scholars did the same to the Djinn, the people of the Nightbringer.
Very interesting and very typical of the harsh reality we live in. The fate of Elias and the future of Laia remain a mystery. As Blood Shrike, Helene stands firmly at her sister Livia’s side. Livia has a happy surprise that could change the Empire for the better. It was fascinating to learn more about Keris and her past, just as it was to learn more about Laia’s mother’s story. Elias gives up everything to help others due to his kindness and tremendous strength. Reaper at the Gates makes my heart ache, but it inspires a distant hope for the amazing characters.
