Gina Royal is really the definition of average: a shy Midwestern housewife with a happy marriage and two adorable children. But when a car accident reveals her husband’s secret life as a serial killer, she must reinvent herself as Gwen Proctor, the ultimate warrior mother.

With her ex now in prison, Gwen has finally found refuge in a new home at remote Stillhouse Lake. Although she continues to be the target of stalkers and internet trolls who believe she had something to do with her husband’s crimes, Gwen dares to believe that her children will finally be able to grow up in peace.

But just as she’s getting comfortable with her new identity, a body turns up in the lake and threatening letters arrive from an all too familiar address. Gwen Proctor must keep friends close to her and enemies at bay to stay out of it, or watch her children fall victim to a killer she enjoys tormenting them. One thing is certain: she has learned to fight evil. And she will never stop.

This was a fascinating read, if I may say so myself. What do you do when you discover that the man you married is a serial killer in hiding? Gina Royal’s life was turned upside down the day she accidentally discovered her husband’s dirty little secret. And after a few difficult years of testing and his own testing of being her accomplice, she and her children have settled in Stillhouse Lake with their new identities.

They have had to move a lot over the years because of all the hate mail and torturers. Apparently there is no witness protection program for the serial killer family who had no idea there was a killer in their house. You really feel for Gina, who is now called Gwen. She really knew nothing of her husband’s secrets, and yet her life and her children’s lives were always in a constant state of turmoil.

It’s kind of complicated, I’ve been trying to figure out if I were a family member of a murder victim, how would I feel about the family of the killer? When it is clear that they are no longer supporting you, visiting you in prison, or feel misunderstood or defensive. I can understand some of the hate, I guess, but some of the hate mail and the scenarios that Gwen had to endure were really tough.

Gwen and her children think they may finally have found a good place to live in the Stillhouse. And during this time, one wonders when the thrills and chills will begin. And then it happens. A body is found in the lake, desecrated in the same way as the victims of Melvin Royal, Gwen’s ex-husband. And Gwen is suddenly the new person of interest on the case.

I admit there were some slow parts to this one. The first body is found before the 100 page mark, but only slows down after a few rounds of questioning. Life goes on for Gwen and she is trying to get back into a normal rhythm. Then the mysterious Sam enters. Gwen can’t help but be suspicious, it’s become a natural habit for her. But after a while, it seems that something could grow between the two. But luckily, romance is not part of this story!

As I said, it was a very interesting read! It seems that poor Gwen will never be able to escape what her husband has done. Internet trolls, as she calls them, always post horrible things about what they want to do to her and her children. They also blame her for her crimes and think she got away with it since her trial ended with her being released, obviously because she is our hero in this story.

There were quite a few suspects in this case, and I must admit I never caught our villain. Although in a way he was right about one of my suspects. I never fully trusted him, and he was right about that. But that’s what I always love about mysteries, guessing the detectives! I say I’m on a 50/50 hot streak and it never bothers me. I guess it’s a good thing he’s not a real detective! LOL!

The ending was, of course, the most intense part of the story. And just as things are coming to an end, I start to wonder where the series is headed because I know there’s at least one more book to follow, and then it happens! That little puzzle piece that comes out and you think, oh leaf. Needless to say, I can’t wait to see what the next book will bring!

Stillhouse Lake was a gripping thriller! The crimes committed in this case were definitely dark. While it wasn’t as fast-paced or edge-of-the-seat as I would have liked, it was a decent read and I’m definitely sticking with the sequel. He has just enough of an edge to lure you into Gwen’s fight!
